Do we really have to start over?

I know this may seem a bit trivial, but is blu-ray really going to stick? Are we going to have to restart movie collections all over again. When I was younger I had a decent one going of VHS, and now they'll be worthless once our last remaining VCR dies. I thought DVD's would stick for a while so I started making a valiant effort to regain my collection in those, but blu-ray is a much better picture and seem to be encroaching on DVDs the same way they did on VHSs... And what about 3D? When it boils down to it, is there really any point in buying movies anymore? The success of things like Netflix and Redbox point to the fact that people value owning movies and tv shows less and less, and due to how fast video technology is changing I don't blame them.

  1. I think DVDs are the staple and are here to stay. I'm holding out with the hope that the two (DVDs and Blue Ray) will somehow wind up being one product compatible with all DVD players. I'm with you, though. There's nothing worse than the realization that all of your years of hard work to build up your movie collection has been rendered useful thanks to the ever changing video tech.

  2. I think it's frustrating, but its awesome at the same time. The technology just keeps getting better and better, and I for one am loving it. The picture and sound quality of a blu-ray movie is awesome, and I couldn't be more excited about 3-D. What I'm more concerned about is the technology we need to use these new products. Sure a blu-ray player isn't cheap but at least that's all we need. 3-D movies work with any dvd or blu-ray player, but require a completely different T.V.! That's a really expensive technology upgrade. I'm hoping that future technology works without requiring huge investments like that to work because at some point it just becomes unrealistic financially.

  3. I agree that DVD's will probably be around for awhile. The quality that they present is adequate for most people. Honestly, I don't even think I've ever watched a blu-ray movie. I think blu-ray is more for people who want the ultimate movie viewing experience. There are still many people, myself included, who are perfectly fine with DVD's for now.
